Alice Haine, Personal Finance Analyst, Bestinvest

The main areas that I cover:
I have a dual role, firstly as a Personal Finance Analyst, where I provide commentary to the media on key data - such as the latest inflation figures, interest rate decisions and house price movements - or discuss money topics on camera for webinars or broadcast channels. I also generate fresh content on a range of personal finance topics – whatever is timely - such as ISA and pension saving, the cost-of-living crisis, budgeting, saving, tax, funding a child’s education, financial gifting and more.
Separately, as a PR professional I am the spokesperson for Bestinvest, helping to promote the brand – which relaunched almost a year ago - through press releases, webinars and media events such as roundtables, parties and lunches.
What was your reaction to making the shortlist?
Absolutely delighted. I had only been in the role for 11 months when the news came through, so it felt like a nice pat on the back.
From your work so far, if you had to pick the campaign you are most proud of, what would it be, and why?
The relaunch of Bestinvest as a hybrid service offering best in class online investing with free coaching by qualified financial planners, was pretty exciting. The revamp was first promoted in January before I started the job but we went live in May 2022, just a month after I joined, so I had to get up to speed very quickly on the brand’s transformation. As someone in the third decade of their career, I’ve realised that being thrown into the deep end is often the best way to start a new role. It was a sink or swim moment, so I chose to swim.
What made you become a financial PR?
I was a journalist for 25 years, with the past 15 years dedicated to personal finance and business, so moving into PR was a major shift. I’d been considering a new career path for a while and used to receive expert personal finance commentary from companies, wondering how do you get into a job like that? When I was approached for this role, it seemed like the perfect fit.
As a relatively new ‘rising star’ financial PR?, what were the challenges you faced in 2022?
2022 was full of twists and turns and slightly bonkers when you consider all the prime ministers we had in the second half of the year and the constant fiscal policy pivots. However, that was probably more exciting than challenging. Drama and lots of sudden change keep personal finance journalists busy and, in turn, that keeps personal finance analysts and commentators busy, which can only be a good thing.
Finally, if you were up for an award for any hobbies/activities outside of work, what would you be likely to win, and why?
I play in my local village stoolball team – a bat and ball game that dates back to the 15th century that is mainly played in the southeast of England and is best described as a combination of cricket and rounders. I’m not particularly good at it but it’s sociable and nothing beats playing on a cricket green on a nice sunny evening, so winning the League this summer would be a huge bonus!
