Charlotte Gifford, The Telegraph

Job-title & media organisation:
Personal Finance Reporter at the Telegraph (shortlisted for work as Researcher/Writer at Which? Money)
What are the main beats you cover?
Investments, wills and probate, later life care, women’s finances.
What was your reaction to making the shortlist?
Delighted! There are so many fantastic journalists up for an award. Making the shortlist was a real privilege.
From your work so far, if you had to pick the story / feature / campaign you are most proud of, what would it be, and why?
My final feature for Which? is a deep-dive on a topic I’m really passionate about - the impact of divorce and unfair financial settlements on women. You can listen to the podcast version here. I was inspired by the bravery of the women I spoke to who went through a financially devastating split and then managed to pick themselves back up again or fight tooth and nail to get a pension-sharing order from the court.
What made you become a financial journalist?
As a journalist working in personal finance, you have the chance to help people take control over a part of their lives that's so important, but where so many people feel in the dark.
2021 was undoubtedly a difficult year for everyone, but what were the particular challenges for you, as a relatively new ‘rising star' financial journalist?
I started in lockdown, so like almost everyone who joined a company during the pandemic, I slightly had the feeling that I was on-the-outside looking in. It was brilliant when I could finally start meeting people in the industry.
Finally, if you were up for an award for any hobbies/activities outside of work, what would you be likely to win, and why?
Going to town on in-depth restaurant research.
