James Fitzgerald, UK Finance Reporter, POLITICO
What are the main beats that you cover?
Financial policy, regulations, politics, economy.
What have been the highlights of your time working in financial journalism? Have there been any pieces of work you’re particularly proud of?
The main highlights have been meeting many influential people in the financial services industry and British politics - and plenty of talented journalists in the industry as well. Breaking exclusives on UK finance and policy over the last few years has also been great.
How can PRs help you with your work?
Send an email with concise points and get to know each journalist’s beat so you can send the right information at the right time.
When are the best/worst times for PRs/press offices to contact you?
Between 10am and lunch is ideal, as we are looking at what stories we want to run then for that day. The worst time is out of office hours, which does happen!
What is the one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out in financial journalism?
Speak to as many industry professionals as you can to learn as much as you can - they are always there to help. Oh, and never burn a source.
What is the piece of financial services research you’d most like to read?
Something that is relevant to that day/week and preferably exclusive. If not, a new spin on figures that no one has done yet.
When you’re telling a story, what’s the most important thing to remember?
Always be accurate, and never misquote someone. The job is to pass on information and facts to readers.
Predict the main stories that will dominate the rest of 2024
The UK general election, and what policies/changes will happen if there is another budget after March 6th.
Sum up your time as a financial journalist in three words
“I am tired.”
If you were up for an award for any hobbies/activities outside of work, what would you be likely to win, and why?
Buying too many books that I will never end up reading.
Finally, if you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Bahn Mi.
