Lesley McPherson
Head of Media Relations
AEGON UK
My business card says I am:
Head of Media Relations, AEGON UK
The main areas of the financial services market that I cover are:
Corporate strategy for AEGON in the UK.
I was prompted into working on the press/communications side of the business by:
I did a languages degree and so most of my career has been in a communications role. My first financial comms role was at Scottish Life International working alongside David Ferguson (chief exec at the Nucleus Financial wrap company) and Philip Martin (propositions development director at F&C).
The biggest influence on my career so far as a communications professional is:
Working with Scott White during his time at AEGON. He has an unparalleled instinct and understanding of what both journalists and companies need. An inspiration.
The best piece of advice I have ever been given is:
"Be the class act."
The best piece of publicity I have achieved for a financial services company is:
I've worked with Otto Thoresen since he first became AEGON UK chief executive in 2005. I'm really pleased with how we have developed AEGON's profile during that time. With our sponsorship deal of British tennis, it has been great to build on this with AEGON coverage in the sports pages and on BBC with the AEGON Championships at Queens Club.
The headline I would most like to see in the finance pages is:
Something along the lines of: It's official - credit crunch is finally over.
The first big decision I would make if I took over the regulation of financial services in the UK is:
Compulsory financial education in schools and investing significantly in the delivery of Money Guidance.
The column/feature in the wider media which I always read is:
Lisa Armstrong's fashion commentary in The Times.
The column/feature in the financial services media which I always read is:
Lombard in the FT. And Newsnight.
I would invest a £500,000 windfall in:
A holiday house near a golf course. Scotland or northern Spain.
The most memorable press trip/press event I have ever arranged for the financial services media is:
AEGON press trips are always memorable! Especially our Edinburgh Fringe weekends! This year, watching Andy Murray win the very first AEGON Championships at Queens was a pretty special day, too. Apart from that, there was a Tom Jones concert at Wembley, a few years ago now....!
If I weren't doing my current job I would probably:
Open a boutique. Run for Parliament. And marry someone rich and famous.
My guiltiest pleasure is:
Saturday night TV - I love watching Strictly Come Dancing and also the X-Factor. Simon Cowell is very clever.
If I was invited to a fancy dress party, I would turn up as a:
Flapper girl from the 1920s.
My top money saving tip during the credit crunch is:
Avoid Starbucks.
You won't know this, but I'm very good at:
Making cupcakes. And, I once made an award-winning Battenburg cake.
