Job-title & media organisation:

Global Head of ESG insight, ESG Clarity, Bonhill.

The main beats that I cover are:

ESG investments whether that’s funds, regulation, campaigns and everything in between.

So don’t waste time telling me about:

Anything eco-friendly that’s not relevant to investing – you’d be surprised on how many of these we get!

The biggest influence on my journalism career to date is:

I think everyone finds this tough as there is such a high standard of journalists in our industry. I would have to say two of my most recent bosses – Katrina Lloyd and Julian Marr – have helped shape the journalist I am today.

The proudest moment of my time working in financial journalism has been:

I can’t pinpoint a moment in time, but I have been very proud of what we have created on ESG Clarity. I joined just before lockdown 2020 and we launched a brand new magazine, revamped the website, launched dozens of new series and initiatives and online events all while working remotely. We have also expanded into the US and Asia, and been recognised through various awards. Not resting on our laurels, our team are always thinking of new ideas, and I love the challenge of keeping it fresh!

The piece of advice I'd give to someone starting out in financial journalism is:

Read back copies (showing my age now as referring to print) or old stories for background on your commute. I did this when I started at Investment Week and it really helped with my knowledge after joining the industry not knowing what a fund was!

My favourite media outlets for financial news are:

ESG Clarity(!), The Economist, Bloomberg.

The best/worst times for PRs/press offices to contact me are:

Mondays – my day off.

My relationship with PRs could be improved if:

Most of them are fantastic and take the time to get to know our title and the kinds of things we are after. But I had someone contact me about T-shirt printing company the other day – and no it wasn’t sustainable.

My favourite financial expert is:

Afraid of naming a few and upsetting the many wonderful experts I deal with every week. We have a lovely bunch on the ESG Clarity Committee that are extremely passionate about what they do and are always fascinating to talk to.

The financial interview I’d most like to arrange is:

I would love to ask the PM about how seriously our government is taking plans for net zero by 2030 – but they appear difficult to pin down right now and not just for an interview.

The piece of financial services research I’d most like to read is:

Not really research but ‘A day in the life of a greenwashing marketing team’. I really don’t know how they think they can get away with it.

My view on the humble press release and how it could be improved is that:

The copy to be embedded in an email rather than attachment, just a personal preference.
Bullet points are helpful.
Omitting ‘ESG is in our DNA’.

My dream job in financial journalism would be:

I’m doing it – I really want to keep pushing ESG Clarity to see what else we can do…

Are there any recent campaigns/features you and your team have worked on that you would like to highlight?

We recently launched ESG Clarity Live and I look forward to having more senior ESG investment professionals as  guests into the studio for the next episodes. I am also looking for academics, scientists etc. to participate in our Ask the Expert series on our educational hub ESG Clarity Intelligence, but they tend to be quite shy!

The one piece of kit I cannot do without as a financial journalist is:

Black Americano.

Given £1,000 I’d invest in cash/gold/shares/property/cryptocurrencies/other:

Dan Kemp, CIO at Morningstar IM, recently said:  "There has never been a better time to invest in ESG..."

You won’t know this, but I’m really good at:

Doing the splits and Take That karaoke (well I wouldn’t quite say good at…)

You won’t know this, but I’m hopeless at:

Taking time out for myself.

And finally… what’s your go-to karaoke song?

'Everything Changes', 'Pray', 'Could it be Magic'…
