"Regulation is a challenge that has long troubled the crypto industry" - Luno

As we approach our next Masterclass, speakers Sam Kopelman, Country Manager, Northern Europe, Luno and Thomas Tudehope, Global Head of Public Policy, Luno, explain why regulation is a challenge that has long troubled the cryptocurrency industry and discuss how consumer protection is an issue in which all crypto industry players must be addressing.
Can you give a quick overview of what your Masterclass will cover?
The session will give an overview of crypto and the current market which will lead to an interactive ‘myth-busting’ portion including asking journalists to decide whether various statements are fact or fiction.
Following this, we will then look to the future of cryptocurrency – particularly the differing regulatory stances across the globe and the opportunities and potential in Web 3.0.
What are the challenges surrounding crypto you would like journalists to help their readers understand? How will you be discussing this at the Masterclass?
There is lots of hype around crypto investing – we wish to debunk some of the myths and highlight the facts.
Regulation is a challenge that has long troubled the crypto industry. By looking towards the future, we want to show where the industry currently stands in terms of regulation, what can be done better and what we hope for the future.
Consumer protection is an issue in which all cryptocurrency industry players must be addressing. To allow the industry to evolve and thrive, we will be highlighting the best practices for investment including education, thinking long term, as well as how to invest safely and responsibly.
The cryptocurrency industry is still relatively nascent, which is why we want to showcase its innovative potential. By drawing on our music partnerships, we will show how crypto can revolutionise the industry whilst helping people release the potential of decentralised technologies.
Any general tips for money writers covering crypto?
Always highlight to readers how important it is to DYOR (do you own research) and educate yourself on crypto invest as part of a diverse portfolio.
Talk about crypto in simple terms that the ordinary reader can understand.
Don’t be single minded – be open to crypto’s innovative potential and use cases.
What would you like to change about how journalists cover crypto?
Don’t feed the hype surrounding crypto with ‘clickbait’ headlines that feed into the shock factor or dissuade people from investing because of a sudden drop. Instead, take a long term position that dismisses the ‘get rich quick’ myth.
Ensure fair representation that considers the fact that the crypto industry is still relatively new and lacks necessary regulation.
